Clinical Supervision
What is it?
Clinical supervision is a tool used to enhance therapeutic competence (e.g. self-awareness and self-efficacy) for registered interns to work with clients in a variety of settings. Clinical supervision is treated as a session to develop and enhance the supervisor and supervisee experience and professional relationship. It is defined by the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling as contact between the registered intern and the qualified supervisor during which client cases are discussed and the qualified supervisor provides the registered intern with oversight and guidance in diagnosing, treating and working with clients in conformance with Florida laws and rules.
Why is it important?
Clinical supervision can have significant personal and professional impacts. It is utilized to examine client outcomes and aid the registered intern in proficient service delivery. Different supervisory methods and techniques including administrative, educational and supportive are utilized to enhance the skillset and credence of the registered intern in their own practice with clients. Receiving timely and constructive feedback is critical for the development of registered interns who work with clients with complex narratives and backgrounds. Clinical supervision can lead to a reduction in stress and anxiety which is linked to job satisfaction. Most importantly, it creates a supportive environment which has led to improved patient care and practitioner competency.
